Forming Human Beings in the Age of the Machine
The AI age has made explicit what was always true — that the scarce currency is human creative substrate. Judgment. Character. Meaning. The capacities only formation builds. We have spent a century dismantling the infrastructure that produces them. This is the case for rebuilding it.
What the book does
Formation, not education. Drawing-out, not molding.
The book argues a single load-bearing claim: universal architecture, particular vocation. Formation builds the universal capacities every human needs — the directional, non-neutral architecture — within which each person discerns their own calling. The model is the midwife and the gardener, not the molder and the engineer. Resolves the authoritarian shadow at the root.
The door is AI and the creativity economy — not the anxious-generation door, which is crowded. As AI commoditizes the codifiable, the scarce thing is exactly what formation makes. The youth crisis appears in the book, but as evidencethat the substrate-producing infrastructure has failed — not as the headline.
The synthesis no competing book holds: cross-traditional convergence (Grundtvig, Iqbal, Frankl, Hahn, Tagore) + contemporary developmental science (Kegan, attachment, optimal frustration) + the AI-and-creativity-economy reframe, drawn together into a single argument about what humans require in order to become themselves.

About the author
Joshua Beneventi
Anthropologist by training (UC San Diego, cum laude, Mel Spiro Award). Founder of the Upstream Foundation — a 501(c)(3) building formation infrastructure for young adults through the Wayfinder Institute, Basecamps, and a digital companion called the Guild.
Beginning an MA in Social Innovation at the University of San Diego in Fall 2026, alongside the Hudson Institute coaching certification. Earlier work spanning monasteries in Thailand, Sufi communities in Andalusia and the Middle East, manuscript study at St. Catherine’s on Mt. Sinai, and seventeen years building alongside people across industries and continents.
UPSTREAM is the intellectual articulation of the case underneath the Upstream Foundation’s work. Lives in San Diego.

Full draft complete. Currently seeking literary representation.
Thirteen chapters drafted and twice-fact-checked. ~85,000–95,000 words. Two verification sweeps complete. Remaining work is structural: introduction rewrite against the v4 spine, continuity pass for chapter hand-offs, residual [VERIFY] flags on illustrative figures, final bibliography and front matter.
