soul of the sea

How can the sport of freediving (apnea) teach us how to live?

What is so unique about this activity which shows us the deeper aspect of what it means to experience life as a human being on this planet?

Are there phenomenological similarities between freedivers’ accounts of their experience in the water and tales of the soul’s internal journey?

As an undergraduate student, I studied sociocultural anthropology and wrote my thesis on the relationship between music and altered states of consciousness and in ritual settings. In graduate school, I studied theology and philosophy with a particular emphasis on certain forms of Sufism. Growing up by the ocean and being a surfer and freediver myself, I cannot help but see the profound connections between the “water and spirit.”

My vision for this project is to interview experienced freedivers across the world, inquiring with them about the introspective and personal development aspects of the sport.

My pilot interview with Pablo Martí can be viewed below.
